Home Business - Junk Mail Survival Tactics 1/2

If your home based business relies on email like mine does, the onslaught of junk mail and spam is a real problem. It's eating up your time so it needs to be fixed. The sooner the better.

Here are several simple ways we home business owners can protect ourselves against spam and junk mail.

CONCEAL YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS

This will stop the email harvesting robots from finding you in the first place.
Simply remove the @ sign anytime that you display your email address in an email or on a website.

For example...

name AT domain.com

name [at] domain.com

name {at} domain.com

Another solution is to filter your incoming emails - either before or after they arrive on your computer.

CHALLENGE AND RESPONSE

These commercial challenge and response systems require a human response from the sender before it ever reaches you. Senders of junk mail won't bother, so you get protected.

SPAM FILTERS "OUT THERE"

You can use the spam filters at gmail.com

I used to think it was somewhat unprofessional when businesses used a gmail.com address but now I see it differently. Why? Because Google offers a handy set of automatic built-in spam filters - and they work a treat. Gmail stops thousands of junk emails and spam that would otherwise arrive on my machine.
In the first few weeks after you set it up, you might want to look at what has been diverted into the spam/junk folder at Gmail. Emails that you value can be moved to the inbox. To train the filters, select the mail item you've just moved and click the Not Spam button.

In Part 2 of this 2-part series, I will share my best tip. Doing this simple little thing helps me save a great deal of time, no matter how much junk email arrives in Outlook Express.

Finally, a suggestion...

Home Business – Junk Mail Survival Tactics 2/2

In Part 1, we looked at several ways to filter out the huge volume of spam and junk mail which threatens to eat up the time you should be spending building your home business.

In this article, we finish the list - and I share my very BEST tip.

The next way to protect your home business from junk mail is...

USE SPAM FILTERS ON YOUR COMPUTER

This is where you filter your email after it arrives on your home computer.
If you use Microsoft Outlook Express, there are various filters you can use. Microsoft calls them ‘rules'. To set up a rule, click Message then click Rules. To review existing mail handling rules, click Tools > Message rules > Mail.

Two of the rules options are 1) you can delete emails from any particular sender and 2) you can delete emails that contain certain words. But I should mention that this word-based control finishes up being a time consuming pest so I don't recommend it.

USE THE DELETE BUTTON OFTEN

The is the simplest solution of all.

Only read the few important emails. Delete the rest, sight unseen, time unwasted.

After trying various other solutions, this is now my favorite spam handling method (along with Gmail). It also works for the excessive volume of emails that come from mailing lists I've chosen to join.

Be very, very selective about which emails you actually open. Don't waste your time. Hit the delete button.

THE BEST JUNK MAIL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM...

Instead of filtering the UNWANTED stuff OUT, I now filter the WANTED stuff IN.

I skim down through my emails and select the few that I want to read and move them into an "Action Required" folder that I've created inside my inbox. (To create such a folder, select the word Inbox, right click, select Create.)
After I've selected what I want, the rest get deleted.

Deleting a ton of emails like that requires that you steel your mind, I know. Like you, I find it so easy to get distracted onto something that ‘looks interesting'. Most of the time it's a waste of one of my most precious resources... my time.
And it's probably the same for you. Be strong, my friend. Don't let email steal away the time you should be spending building your home business.
